Project: The Sister Moses Project

The Sister Moses Project is seeking dancers and actors for the 2019 performances on Feb. 8th & 9th at Huston-Tillotson University at 7:30 pm. We are looking for both professionals and students/community performers who want to appear alongside the Desert Dance Theatre.

This powerful dance drama features Desert Dance Theatre with Renee Davis as Harriet Tubman, dramatic narration by Renee Morgan Brooks, African drumming and music direction by Step Raptis, accompaniment by String Sounds and traditional spirituals sung by a choral ensemble featuring baritone soloist, Greg Dansby. Austin performances will feature the Huston-Tillotson University Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Gloria Quinlan and Ballet Afrique under the direction of Ms. China Smith along with other guest performers and dancers. The unique blend of this 45-minute multidisciplinary presentation highlights the most important episodes of Harriet Tubman’s life.

Sister Moses: The Story of Harriet Tubman is a beautiful story of a courageous woman’s determination to free her people from slavery through the Underground Railroad.  She was one of America’s first liberated women who fought against all odds for the sake of freedom and equality. Our goal in producing this program is to bring light to the incredible accomplishments of Harriet Tubman, the anti-slavery activist.

Project: The Feud: A Musical Comedy

Musical comedy to play at DAC in Austin February 14 - 16 and 21 - 23, 2019.  Rehearsals will be 3 evenings a week beginning January 21, then each night on tech week. A fun, one-hour musical comedy with a live band.

The Civil War is over, but the fighting rages on in 1870s Texas. In this one-hour musical comedy, a beleaguered army officer stands between an outlaw family and a band of vigilantes, while a wronged woman seeks her own kind of twisted justice.

The Sutton-Taylor feud was the most violent in Texas history, pitting ex-members of the notorious State Police against the Taylor ring (which boasted killer John Wesley Hardin). In this musical comedy based on actual events, an army officer risks his life and reputation to try to bring a lasting peace.

The Feud brings together wronged women, drunken soldiers, corrupt lawmen and desperate outlaws who can sing, dance, ride hard and shoot straight.

Project: HISTORY OF NOW

The stage production "History of Now" will premiere in 2020. The dynamic story will combine stage and screen including flashback scenes and archive film to maximise the potential and intensity of the piece. The production also offers an educational workshop and an outreach program.

The subtle yet powerful opening is engaging in its thoughtful approach to flicking the switch between darkness and light. Within this busy production, there are stories within stories. Dynamic stage sets and the combination of screen and stage add a powerful creative dimension. Yet throughout, it is the presence of Krystyna Haeutmann, the energetic young girl and the elderly reflective lady play perfectly, two leading characters of the same person playing opposite one another. It is both dynamic and a masterstroke that validates the story and believability of the character which is essential to the telling of this story.

Ms. Haeutmann, now eighty years of age, lives in the same house she moved into on her arrival in the United States in 1951 having spent six years in England, where she was unable to settle. A former teacher of literature, she lives a simple life alone but has never allowed herself to feel lonely. In her opinion; a form of self-pity, unbecoming to the memory and legacy of her younger life and brief forced existence. On reading an advertisement in a national newspaper for German-born survivors of the Holocaust to come forward to record their experiences for future generations and realizing her life is drawing to its natural close, she makes the decision to tell her story and reveal her hidden past. However, history shows a secret of its own.

"They were Jews they deserved to die" Haeutmann otherwise calm and calculated in her words burst forward, spinning the reporter round in her chair. "Is that how he still feels?" A rhetorical question which is not lost in the silence that pursues. Throughout the production, Alex Jayson's use of silence at times is deafening in its dramatic pause. This is illustrated perfectly in a segment of the play that appears during Act Two. Haeutmann's narrative becomes increasingly more poignant due to the past moments that again reflected darkness and light. Haeutmann’s mood change now shifts the dynamics of the production. The aged figure appears detached, as though removed from the present her every word, etched in pain, is a footstep taking her back until there is a sense of her presence on stage waiting. Her words stop. There is a still image, no movement until…The young Krystyna enters on stage. The symmetry between the young and old HAEUTMANN's synchronized movements are compelling. Although there is little happening, every single tranquil, undisturbed flick of the wrist becomes even more heightened. Jayson’s skillful writing and directing create a moment that is beautiful and touching. It is powerful in its simplicity. Harrowing in its execution. However witnessing silently as they become bound to each other at this moment, that is a methodical sweeping embrace across the years. A light within the shadow.

The play’s greatest strengths are that it has enough confidence in the audience’s intelligence to avoid spelling things out too explicitly. The relationship between the reporter and Haeutmann whose words drive the play forward with a delicate blend of intellectual and visceral overtures reflect her life and experience against the reporter’s innocence correctly. It is a smart blend that allows the writer to confront and challenge key issues that discharge the need to question their place in time.

It would be wrong to classify this as just one more Holocaust production. In fact, it is an intelligent and entertaining piece of work that engages on many levels that appeals to young and old across all groups. To witness the History of Now as anything less would be like receiving a gift that is so beautifully wrapped that we leave the real gift inside! To fully comprehend Alex Jayson's latest work we must carefully remove the outer packaging to find the right "PRESENT"

Project: Good Grief

Good Grief is an independent feature that looks to push the boundaries of dramatic story telling by addressing the uncomfortable issue of death and mourning in an unconventional way.

This is a micro-budget film, so payment will be below union rates and possibly deferred, but I am open to offering some of my services, including head shots and reel edits. I know it's hard to work for cheap, and I would like to do whatever I can to provide extra compensation.

Audition Date: TBD
Paid / Non-Paid: Below union/possibly deferred
Other / Additional Compensation: Copy for reel/credit, possibly headshots/reel edits.
Meals / Lodging / Transportation: Snacks and Beverages
Production Start/Wrap Date: TBD
Production Location: Austin, TX

Good Grief centers around a parolee, Ivan, who upon release from his latest stint in the prison, finds out that his mother has passed away. Fighting against the commercialization surrounding funerals and his already dire financial situation, Ivan and his younger sister Alex struggle to find the money and heart to bury their mother the "normal" way.
